 Tonsillitis Q&A

What are tonsils and what is the medical definition of tonsillitis?

Tonsils are soft glandular tissues located on either side of the throat and are an important part of the body's immune system. When these tissues become infected, the condition is known as tonsillitis.

Tonsillitis can be transmitted through physical contact or tiny droplets of saliva released into the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It’s crucial for those experiencing tonsillitis to practice good hygiene to prevent spreading the infection.

What are the symptoms of tonsillitis?

The main symptom of tonsillitis is a sore throat, often accompanied by a persistent cough. Fever is a common response to infection, and individuals may also experience headaches, fatigue, and pain while swallowing. Swollen glands in the neck are also typical, and some may notice white spots at the back of their throat. While some people may never experience tonsillitis, others, particularly children, may have frequent occurrences.

What are the treatment options for tonsillitis?

An accurate diagnosis is essential for determining the appropriate treatment. An ENT surgeon, such as Dr. Vidya Ramdas or Dr. Salison Salim at our clinic, can usually diagnose tonsillitis through a visual examination and by discussing your symptoms.
Antibiotics are rarely used in the treatment of tonsillitis since many infections are viral rather than bacterial. Treatment generally focuses on preventing dehydration and using over-the-counter or prescription medications to relieve pain until the infection subsides. For those who experience recurrent tonsillitis, a tonsillectomy—surgical removal of the tonsils—may be recommended. With advancements in medical techniques, this procedure is now safe, straightforward, and associated with minimal side effects.

Pediatric Chronic Tonsillitis

In children suffering from recurrent tonsillitis, a tonsillectomy may be the most effective treatment option. This surgery not only addresses the current infection but can also significantly reduce the likelihood of future throat infections. Additionally, a tonsillectomy may be necessary if the tonsils are enlarged enough to obstruct breathing or swallowing. This procedure is more commonly performed on children than adults.
