What is a Skin Prick Test?

A skin prick test is a diagnostic tool used to identify allergic reactions to a variety of substances, such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites, mold, and certain foods. During the test, small amounts of allergen extracts are applied to your skin, and the reaction is observed to determine if you are allergic to any of the substances tested.

Why Choose Our 75 Allergen Panel?

At RelentCare, we perform a 75 allergen skin prick test panel, which is a more extensive screening that can identify allergies to a wide range of common environmental and food allergens.

This panel is designed to test for the following categories:

  • Airborne allergens: Pollen, mold, pet dander, dust mites, and more.

  • Food allergens: Common allergens like dairy, peanuts, eggs, and shellfish.

  • Insect venom allergens: Such as bee stings and wasp venom.

By testing for a broad spectrum of allergens, we can pinpoint the exact triggers of your symptoms and provide a targeted treatment plan.

When is the Skin Prick Test Recommended?

Our skin prick test is typically used to diagnose allergies to:

  • Hay fever (Allergic Rhinitis)

  • Asthma (Allergic Asthma)

  • Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)

  • Food allergies

  • Pet allergies [ cat or dog]

  • Insect venom allergies (e.g., bee stings)

If you suspect that certain allergens are causing your symptoms, the skin prick test can help provide clarity and guide your treatment options, which may include allergen avoidance, medications, or immunotherapy (allergy shots).

How the Skin Prick Test Works

The procedure for the skin prick test is simple and usually takes about 20 to 40 minutes. Here's what you can expect:

  1. Preparation: A small area of your skin (usually your forearm or upper back) is cleaned with alcohol.

  2. Allergen Application: We apply small drops of 75 different allergen extracts on your skin. Each drop corresponds to a different substance.

  3. Skin Pricking: A lancet is used to gently prick your skin, allowing the allergens to enter just below the surface. A new lancet is used for each allergen.

  4. Control Test: We use saline as the control substance, which typically does not cause a reaction. This helps ensure accurate results.

  5. Observation: After about 15 minutes, your skin is examined for signs of an allergic reaction. If you’re allergic to any of the substances, you’ll develop raised, red, itchy bumps, known as wheals.

Results Interpretation

  • Positive Reaction: A raised, red, itchy bump at the test site indicates a possible allergy to that substance. The size of the bump helps us determine the degree of sensitivity.

  • Negative Reaction: No reaction means you’re likely not allergic to that substance.

While the skin prick test is generally accurate, false positives and false negatives can occur. This means you may show a reaction to a substance you don’t react to in real life, or vice versa.

Safety and Risks

Skin prick testing is generally safe, but some mild side effects can occur. The most common is itching, swelling, or redness at the test site, which usually resolves within a few hours or days. In rare cases, a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) could occur, so all tests are performed in our clinic, where we have immediate access to emergency treatment if needed.

How to Prepare for the Test

Before scheduling a skin prick test, inform your healthcare provider about any medications you are currently taking. Certain medications, including antihistamines, tricyclic antidepressants, and heartburn medicines, can interfere with test results. You may be asked to stop taking some medications for several days before the test.

Your Personalized Allergy Treatment Plan

Once we have the results of your skin prick test, our experienced team will help create a personalized treatment plan based on your specific allergies. This may include:

  • Allergen avoidance strategies to limit exposure.

  • Medications such as antihistamines, nasal sprays, or inhalers to manage symptoms.

  • Immunotherapy (allergy shots) to help your body build tolerance to allergens over time.
