Nosebleeds (epistaxis) are common in children and can be alarming for parents. While they are usually harmless, frequent nosebleeds may require medical attention. At Relentcare ENT Centre, we specialize in diagnosing and treating nasal conditions, ensuring your child receives the best care.

Causes of Nosebleeds in Children

  1. Dry Air – Dry climates or indoor heating can dry out nasal membranes, making them prone to bleeding.

  2. Nose Picking – A common cause in children, frequent nose picking can irritate or damage blood vessels inside the nose.

  3. Allergies & Infections – Allergic rhinitis, colds, and sinus infections can lead to nasal inflammation and increased bleeding.

  4. Injury or Trauma – A fall, bump, or even aggressive nose blowing can trigger a nosebleed.

  5. Underlying Medical Conditions – Rarely, conditions like clotting disorders or nasal tumors may contribute to recurrent nosebleeds.

Prevention Tips

  • Keep the Air Moist – Use a humidifier in your child’s room, especially during dry seasons.

  • Encourage Gentle Nose Care – Teach your child to avoid picking their nose and to blow gently.

  • Nasal Saline Sprays – Regular use of saline sprays or ointments can keep the nasal passages hydrated.

  • Trim Nails – Keeping nails short can minimize trauma from nose picking.

  • Manage Allergies – If allergies contribute to nasal irritation, consult an ENT specialist for appropriate treatment.

What to Do During a Nosebleed

  1. Stay Calm – Reassure your child and keep them relaxed.

  2. Lean Forward – Have them sit upright and lean slightly forward to prevent swallowing blood.

  3. Pinch the Nose – Using the thumb and index finger, pinch the soft part of the nose for about 5-10 minutes.

  4. Use a Cold Compress – Applying ice or a cold cloth to the nose can help constrict blood vessels.

  5. Avoid Tilting the Head Back – This can cause blood to flow into the throat, leading to coughing or nausea.
